Boxing Classes

POW's boxing program offers a unique and comprehensive training schedule. Our boxing is suitable for all levels and we welcome newcomers. We have a great mix of adult women and men, many with aspirations of competing that are fulfilled through amateur tournaments like the Golden Gloves, as well as several local fighting cards. However, if you are drawn to the overall physical and cardiovascular benefits of boxing and you have a desire to learn how to box, POW is perfect for you. We offer several different types of boxing classes. Use various tools to cross-training your body and develop punching power, footwork skills and the necessary level of boxing conditioning.

Boxing Pro Conditioning with Mitts or Sparring
Experience a class that helps you develop your boxing skill set. You will use drills that have been a part of the Pro boxing arena. They will be listed on a scroll that will hang during class. The goal is to move through 20 of these drills in 25 minutes. Drills will be added over the weeks. Each drill will enhance power, speed or coordination for the sport of boxing. Katalin and Mike have picked their favorite drills for you to do in this intervalized training format. Everyone will first warm up and do the 25 minute of sport specific conditioning drills and then break up into two group: mitts or sparring. Take advantage of cross training yourself and working on technical aspects of your boxing game.

Boxing 101
This class is going to break down the fundamentals of boxing. It will drill basic combos and footwork. Shadow boxing will be one of the teaching tools used to help this class. It will start from the ground up in giving its students a solid foundation.

Olympic Boxing
This class will still teach and drill the fundamentals of boxing. However, its goal is to take boxing to a higher level. It will facilitate taking your boxing skills to the level of tournament fighter. It will build combinations that earn points for Olympic style boxing. It will also teach how that game is scored. These rules are used worldwide for all National amateur boxing events . It will emphasis balance, footwork and hand-speed. Requires contact.

Boxing: Counter Drills
There is more to learning how to box than throwing the basic 1-2 combination. This class will emphasize the strategy of defense. Students will learn how to defend against all punches in boxing. Each punch has a number of counters that students will learn. The class drills will focus on those individual defenses. All levels welcome.

Golden Gloves Boxing
This class caters to the students who have decided to compete in the Chicago Golden Gloves. This tournament is held each winter at St. Andrew's Gym on Addison. It is an excellent venue to safely test your skills. All students that take this class must spar. The class focuses on preparing those competing at the Gloves. Not all participants have to compete in the Gloves, but rather be committed during class to sparring and participating in the drills that hone amateur boxing skills.

Old School Boxing
This class brings several traditional or 'old school' boxing training drills into an interval format class. The purpose of the drills is to highlight a technical aspect of boxing and sport specifically train for its improvement. Although you will not be chasing a chicken around the floor, you will have a chance to do traditional mitt drills and experience several different 'old school' drills.

Boxing Circuit Fighter's Drills
This class combines all types of training drills together. Students will be hitting mitts, heavy bags, tear drop bags and more. It utilizes various drills to strengthen the body and provides students with an interest in sparring, the option to get in the ring.

Boxing Bootcamp
This class is a circuit format boxing class. It offers a lot of cross-training and keeps its students highly motivated. The class moves quickly and is fast paced.
